Recognition and Praise.
Does it improve quality, performance and productivity?
Does it keep them motivated and loyal?
By Bob Urichuck
Maintaining
a motivated staff is not always the easiest of tasks,
but it does pay off for you, your customers and the employee.
This article focuses on closing off periods, or events,
with employee recognition.
If you want to avoid losing your best employees, and
encourage others to do better recognizing them publicly
may save yourself the time and money of having to find
and re-train new staff.
As you prepare to enter a new
year, season, quarter or month, you must take the time
to reflect on what made the last period, or event, successful
and what could have made it better.

| The
Need for Institutional Intervention in Skills Development
in the UAE
By Centre for Labour Market Research & Information (CLMRI),
Tanmia
The rapid changes in technologies and the consequences
of economic liberalization and globalization, are posing
serious challenges to the training and skills development
systems in all countries (Gill, Fluitman and Dar, 2000).
They need to be more flexible, become more enterprise-driven,
should be built on partnerships between public and private
sectors, and provide for "decent work".

Zero
Defects: Do We Really Understand
By Patrick Donnally, Harrington Middle East
A few years ago Intel Corporation experienced
a design error in its recently released Pentium microprocessor.
Rather than addressing the problem as something that should
never occur they decided to try and explain it away. They
stated that "errors happen", that the probability of failure
was very small and that users should live with it, they
stated that replacement would be too costly for Intel,
etc. Intel's problem and their immediate efforts to expain
away the situation did not sit well with computer customers
around the world. The above situation and Intel's response
illustrates a very important point....many organizations
throughout our current global economy still do not understand
the concept of "zero defects" and the profound impact
that it has on the long term success of the company. Had
Intel understood and embraced the concept as a basic corporate
strategic policy, they would have saved themselves untold
millions of dollars and an immeasurable amount of lost
customer good will.

| 2003
- Hard to forget, easy to remember*
You have thought about re-engineering your organization.
While an optimist would see a glass half-full and a pessimist,
half-empty, a rational assessment of events in the Gulf
region during 2003 throws up a mixed bag, just the way
that any developing society should evolve. While there
were enough incidents in the region that could be construed
as aberrations in an age of peace, there were ample events
that sought peace and development in a time of war.
