All of us have been trained to read, write, and
calculate numbers. We've been trained to operate a computer, a fax machine, and an
automobile. We've learnt how to protect ourselves from being victimized. We learnt many,
many more things.
How many of us, have you? taken a course on ethical conduct? Ethics training for most of
us has been nonexistent or superficial. This is changing. There is, fortunately, an
accelerating trend in the world to train ethics.
Dear Partners, There are four ways to enhance ethics within our organizations, one of
which I am going to tackle this month, and I will leave the rest for months to come. The
top one is Inspiration. Inspiration is fostered by Leadership by example. Our staff always
pays careful consideration to what we say and what we do. Furthermore, we have to make
sure that everyone, especially newcomers, know and understand the rules and values that
should guide their hearts and behavior. The technical compliance with laws is necessary
but not always enough!! A person can be dishonest, break commitments, and be unfair, and
unaccountable without breaking law. Law cannot replace the need for sensitivity,
conscience or free one of the moral duties to adhere to traditional ethical principles.
These are some of my thoughts while I was enjoying listening to Dr. Jagdish Parikh, our
honorable guest speaker in a workshop held by DQG. I hope I would go on to the rest of the
ethical aspects next month.
